I was ‘cleaning up’ my harddisk when I saw this batch of photos I took in 2004 with my Minolta Dimage 5. The Dimage 5 was my first ‘real’ camera back then. It’s only a 3mp camera but it served me well till I decided to sell it away. Ok, these photos were taken in the old Changi Hospital. This is one of Singapore’s ‘famous’ place for photography but it has its own share of freaky stories revolving around it. I shan’t tell any freaky stories here cos you can google it yourself. heh.

Built in 1930’s, the Old Changi Hospital (OCH) has quite a long and rich history. OCH is a typical replica of buildings built by British Colonial architects in the early 20’s. Surprisingly OCH was not meant to be a hospital when it was first built. The British was planning to have a heavily guarded military location in the east of Singapore.

taken from Singapore VR

We were fortunate we didn’t encounter anything of the 3rd kind during the photography outing, if you know what I mean. However we were chased by a couple of dogs who were guarding that place and well, my friend and I were close to being bitten. We managed to hide inside this really dark, freaky room while the boys distracted those dogs and we were safe. We didn’t stay long in that place, probably about an hour. I guess all of us wanted to leave before sunset and get the hell out of there fast.

I shoot a lot with high ISO (above picture shot at iso2000) and I’m ok with the output. There’s always noise reduction sw like noiseninja if there’s a need. Of course, a cleaner image would be good but retaining all the details is a MUST. I know some cameras produces softer images with reduced details and poor tonal gradation (these are no-nos to me, at least!) at the cost of their high level ISO performance.

Ok, so I bought an iPhone late last year. I’ve never been an Apple fan and the iPhone isnt exactly the phone that I want either. But I was intrigue when I saw the Hipstamatic app online and decided that the iPhone is what I want (for now). It makes boring pictures interesting without the use of any image editing sw on the pc and well, I began taking pictures almost every moment. I downloaded more photography apps later with Camerabag and Format126 becoming quick favourites.

Photography on the iPhone or iPhoneography has become a freeing experience for me and lends itself to more spontaneity. Of course, I can say that about any other handphones that I owned but the photography apps is what makes the iPhone different. Even my old SE K800i takes better quality pictures. Ultimately the image is all that matters and it is in the eye of the artist.

(p.s. If you want an excellent resource for iPhone photo app reviews, pls visit www.iphoneography.com. I got most of the apps after reading the reviews here.)

Sarah has just swallowed a battery, one of those flat, round ones which you can find in a calculator, yesterday. My heart almost stopped when I found an empty package which was originally sealed. And almost stopped again when the xray result stated that there was indeed a battery in her tummy. She was prescribed lots of laxatives to aid her system to poop the batt out. She looks ok but in any case she appears lethargic or looks like in pain, I have to alert her pediatrician immediately. In the meantime, my job is to look for the batt in her poop. What a bad start to the new year!

As promised, here’s a video montage of our jalan2 (outing) trips using the digital Harinezumi. I also found out that my Harinezumi is hack’able via this blog, Circle Rectangle (p.s. beware if you are visiting this blog. Lots of poison inside!!! hehehe) .

If you have one, all you got to to is press the “OK” button and the shutter button together. At the same time, switch your camera on. If your Harinezumi’s version is 1.11 or 1.14 (like mine!), you will see the debug menu with the RGB settings. Just chg some numbers and voila! Your pictures will look like they’ve been xprocessed (well, almost) and you will also get a liveview on your screen which the Harinezumi doesn’t have in the first place. Sounds exciting? Apparently the hack’able version is quite hard to get and I was lucky enough to get it.
